Origin

Tsubaki's parents were initially from the Azim Steppe. Like many other Raen Auri, they migrated from their homeland with a young Tsubaki in tow in hopes of a better life. With all of the tribal fighting, they felt it would be hard to raise Tsubaki in that kind of environment. So instead, they chose to find a better location to raise her. After some traveling and migration, they finally came across a pleasant village called Sui-no-Sato in the Ruby Sea. It was small but inhabited by other Raen Auri who had left their homeland. It was there that Tsubaki called home for several years. As peaceful and beautiful as it was, Tsubaki often dreamed of exploring the world. She wanted to know what was out there beyond their quaint little village. Tsubaki's parents had been quite firm with her about the rules of their home, often insisting that this is where she belonged and had no business leaving. Tsubaki became more anxious and curious the longer she was denied her opportunity to leave the village. The furthest she had been allowed to leave Sui-no-Sato had been within the Ruby Sea. On occasion, she had been able to visit Kugane, with the exception that her parents had to accompany her. They fervently denied her whenever she'd ask about Doma.Of course, by now, the Garlean's occupation in Doma had been well-known, but Tsubaki wanted to see it for herself, even knowing the dangers. "I'll be careful" and "I will stay hidden" were all fine and dandy in practice, but as a fledgling Auri at the age of 16 -- full of insatiable curiosity -- it did not go as planned. Sneaking out under the guise of a quick trip to Isari, she made her way to Doma. She had been old enough to travel alone, as long as it had been in the confines of the Ruby Sea. Her parents had been none the wiser. She made her way to Isari as planned, taking the opportunity to seek out directions toward Doma. Most people turned her away, insisting that she would abandon the idea of going to such a dangerous place if she had any sense. There had been one person who had given her the information she needed to make her way there. It wasn't until a concerned resident sent word to her parents about her plans to visit Doma. It took a while for word to reach them, but the instant that they found out, they hurried after her.Afraid that her reckless actions would get her killed, her parents rushed to stop her. They had managed to find her with the help of several eyewitnesses of the young Auri teenager. She claimed that she would have been fine on her own and wanted to see for herself just what the empire had done to these people. The unfortunate reality was that she was just a naive dreamer who no longer wanted to be shielded from the reality of their world. She no longer wanted to be coddled and ignorant of the outside world. If only she had listened to her parents all those times. There had been no mercy. When the Garlean soldiers found them, her parents gave their lives for her to escape. She managed to get away, returning home to Sui-no-Sato with immense regret and despair in her heart. It had become clear what had transgressed back in Doma. The others felt that berating a broken girl would do no good. She appreciated that the others had refrained from talking about it. If anything, it became much more apparent to the villagers that they needed to stick together and shut out the outside world. Tsubaki spent the next two months lost and unsure about where to go from there. She hadn't realized just how much she had taken for granted when her parents were still around to "boss" her around. It was too late to say sorry for all those times she had argued back with them. It was too late to say, "I'm sorry." It was just... too late. She couldn't take back what she had done. Her dreams of exploring the world had been dashed, but her need for work had not. She had finally made a decision. Sui-no-Sato had started to feel stuffy and uncomfortable. Though people refrained from speaking of the instant, they merely kept their thoughts in hushed whispers behind her back instead. Not so hushed that she could not hear about them. She had lost her place here. The others had lost their trust in her. It was time to leave, and not for the reasons she had intentionally planned for. She traveled from place to place, trying to find work and a direction for her life for about a year. Some treated her like an average person, while others welcomed her with hostility. Sometimes it has been hard to find work. Sometimes people turned her away before even having the chance to ask for work.Along the way, she had come across Troupe Falsiam. Although still a small troupe, their performance awed and inspired her. It gave her something she thought she had long since lost. Hope. Watching their dance lifted her spirit. She noticed how it had eased other people's suffering. She came to realize what she finally wanted to do with her life. She wanted to atone for her mistakes. She wanted the power to bring comfort and joy to those who had also fallen on hard times. So she sprung to action, asking to join the troupe. She had no experience, but she was willing to learn and had the drive.Nashmeira had been hesitant, but being the only dancer at the time, she finally agreed to take her on as an apprentice. For once, in what felt like a long time, Tsubaki felt like she was actually doing some good for the world. Their travels also allowed her to see the world as she had once dreamed, one destination at a time. Tsubaki stuck around for a while but eventually felt like she needed to see the world for herself. After about six years of traveling with the troupe, she bid her goodbyes and made way for Eorzea; but not before Nashmeira could find another dancer to take her place.Landing in Limsa Lominsa, the idea of a city built on piracy didn't particularly put her off. After all, there was plenty of piracy back home. She had traveled around the world with the troupe, but one thing never quite felt comfortable. There was a glaring lack of other Auri in Eorzea. Pirates didn't bother her, but the looks she got from goers did. They often made her feel like maybe she had made a mistake by striking it out on her own in a mostly foreign land. Despite that, she would not let her resolve to falter. She was a much different person than she had been eight years ago. Her rebellious phase had been all but spent on one single mistake that changed her life. She was a stronger person now, or so she tried to believe.

A Realm Reborn

Limsa Lominsa
What was there to do in a foreign land when you were not busy touring it? Thankfully, now she had all of the time in the world to explore it at her own pace. Even if she was no longer in the troupe, she could still do something good with her life. Finding work here was much easier than it had been back home. With the number of travelers and citizens alike in Limsa, people needed to solve plenty of problems. If she could help people in need -- especially getting paid to do so -- she wanted to do what was in her power to achieve. The jobs were random with varying importance, but the reports of missing people particularly worried her. There were plenty of problems, but this seemed much direr than anything else she'd come across. So she decided to take a look into it.
Eventually, she found herself at Seasong Grotto. After following the leads that suggested they could locate the kidnappers there, she chanced a meeting with Y’shtola for the first time. She was a Miqo’te who was also on the scent of the kidnappers. Unfortunately, instead of finding any clues, they were greeted by a goobbue. After the fight, Y’shtola set to investigate the matter when Tsubaki noticed a blue crystal lying on the ground. Not sure where it came from, she had little time to ponder it. It had begun to float the moment she approached it, and she found herself in an unknown area. This encounter was her first introduction to Hydaelyn. After this blessed introduction, she woke up moments later.According to Y'shtola, she had collapsed at the moment of their victory. Y'shtola had assumed that it could be a surfeit of Aether. Upon mentioning the giant crystal, Y'shtola gave a vague response that suggested she had an idea of what it was but left it at that. The goobbue seemed to be upset due to a knife lodged in it. Deduced to be of piratical origins, she sent Tsubaki to return with the knife as she took her leave to continue investigating.Following a few more leads, Tsubaki eventually connected the dots to the tattooed pirate. Taking down a golem upon arriving, Y’shtola arrived shortly after. An odd sensation happened as she peered into what seemed to be Y’shtola’s past. She learned about the beast tribes working to summon their primals through Y’shtola’s vision.Though she had no clues as to what caused her to pass out, she had a feeling that it was somehow linked to looking into recent memories of those around her. Y’shtola seemed like she had something that she wanted to talk about after Sevrin turned himself in, but that would have to wait for a later time. For now, Tsubaki decided it was best to return to Baderon at the Drowned Wench to give her report after a short talk at Summerford Farms. As it turns out, the pirates answered to the Sahagin. They planned to blow up the ship Victory to cause confusion and attack the Maelstrom directly. Planning to intercept them, Tsubaki went to deal with the Serpent Reavers at Swiftport. With the Reavers taken care of, the Yellowjackets headed off to hunt down some of the stragglers, leaving Tsubaki alone to deal with a mysterious cloaked suspect. It was this black-cloaked stranger who was also responsible for the golem. Whomever this person was, they were certainly not normal. They had some control over what seemed to be aetherical arcane arts, summoning what looked like a Sahagin. The mysterious person commented about putting their plan in peril. During the fight, Y’shtola came and assisted her. After they defeated the suspect, they commented about “Paragons.” Tsubaki didn’t know what to make of it, but Y’shtola seemed to know what they were referring to. She introduced her to what was often called the “Bringers of Chaos .”They are more commonly called “Ascians.” All of this time, the Ascians manipulated the beast tribes into summoning their gods. They had taught them how to summon their respective primal in the first place. They also enabled their efforts by providing them with the crystals to achieve their summons. She had asked Y'shtola if the Sharlayans had ever encountered these Ascians. Y'shtola had picked up on the strangeness of her question. She had never spoken about where she came from, yet Tsubaki seemed to know without being told. She mentioned something about a gift but was interrupted by the Yellowjackets' return. With the kidnapping investigation coming to a close, it meant that the people of Limsa Lominsa could finally breathe easier.Heroic.That was the first time that word applied to her. It pleased Tsubaki to hear that she could do some good and help where she could. However, having her deeds called “heroic” did not feel as good as they should have. She was no hero. She just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Little did she know the strain that would cause as she continued her journey to find herself and her true calling.Tsubaki returned to Limsa Lominsa to report what had happened to Reyner and the Ascian she had encountered. What was meant to be a standard check-in became something much more extravagant when Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn stopped by. Having assisted in bringing the kidnapping investigation to a close, Tsubaki assumed her efforts would be rewarded somehow, but she wasn’t looking for gil or recognition. She hadn’t expected the Admiral herself to show up to thank her. Baderon and Commodore Reyner reported on Tsubaki’s deeds during her time here to Merlwyb. The banquet invitation was very kind, but she couldn’t help but feel that she did not deserve such honors. They were honors befitting a hero. Still, it was hard to refuse, lest she made a bad impression. While at the banquet, she mostly kept to herself, awkwardly nodding to those who wished to give her praise. Upon showing Y’shtola and the Admiral the crystal she had found previously at the Grotto, Y’shtola identified it as a Crystal of Light. Her worries only grew worse upon hearing that not only was she some sort of new hero to those in Limsa Lominsa, but the Admiral had also deemed her a vessel of a higher power. It was power that would be better suited to someone far more capable than her.Merlwyb informed her about the Warriors of Light of old, protecting Eorzea from the corruption of primals. These Warriors of Light also helped battle against the Garleans at the Battle of Carteneau. What was she supposed to do with this knowledge? Did they really expect her to pick up the mantle of “Warrior of Light” as these heroes had in the past? It felt like her life was starting to slip between her fingers once more, but Tsubaki found it challenging to decline right there and then.Slipping into another memory, she saw a small portion of what happened during the retreat at Carteneau. Taking up the mantle of a hero sounded scary, but what she witnessed seemed much more important to her. She would hesitantly accept if it came down to her being their champion. The responsibilities that came with it seemed intimidating and scary, but she would do her best if she could prevent another calamity such as this.Tsubaki woke up lying in bed in her room at the inn. Like the previous times that she had slipped into somebody’s memory, she seemed to pass out. Baderon had to carry her back to the inn. Baderon informed her that the Admiral wished to speak to her once she felt better. Continuing to talk about the battle and the Warriors of Light, the Admiral told her that it had been five years, but people were still suffering. She wished to put together a memorial service in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Carteneau. She also expressed her interest in making Tsubaki her personal envoy to pass on the word.An envoy seemed like an important role, yet it was simply passing on the proposal to the other city-states; Surely, she could do that much. Her first stop was Gridania to meet with the Elder Seedseer, Kan-E-Senna. She spoke about the Meteor project. It was a plan to cause the lesser moon, Dalamud, to be dragged out of the sky to plunge it to the surface to eradicate all life below. The elder primal Bahamut emerged from Dalamud to scorch Eorzea. The Archon Louisoix Leveilleur gave his life to defend everyone during the Battle of Carteneau. With Kan-E-Senna in agreement, Tsubaki then moved on to Ul'dah. Raubahn spoke about the Garlean empire taking over 50 years prior and even mentioned Gaius von Baelsar's intent for conquest. Once business was taken care of in Ul'dah, Tsubaki helped clear the Copperbell Mines and returned to town, only to be cut short. Some ruffians were harassing a woman, and she intervened. After the altercation, Y'shtola finally spoke about her strange ability. It turned out that Tsubaki wasn't the only one who could see visions with this gift. At the very least, she didn't faint this time. Y'shtola left her with an offer to join the Scions of Seventh Dawn.Momodi gave her directions on where to find this organization. Tsubaki hardly thought of herself as a hero, but she would take this if it was a chance to make a difference. Setting out to meet this friend of Y’shtola’s, Tsubaki felt this was the first step was to understanding this gift that she was given to her. If there was someone who knew anything about it, she had to make the trip for that alone. After meeting Tataru, she brought her to meet the Antecedent. The Scions of the Seventh Dawn
Tsubaki was formally introduced to Minfilia and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. It was described as an order that transcends political boundaries. Its sole purpose was to preserve the future of Eorzea. Minfilia explained what the Echo was, finally giving her some of the answers she had been seeking. The Echo was a vital gift in facing the primal threat. If this newfound gift of hers could be used to do some good, then that by itself was an attractive offer. The benefits of joining such an organization were nice but not something she particularly needed. But, just like when she had found the troupe, this offer seemed like a sign to her. Although Tsubaki hadn’t given her answer yet, Minfilia entrusted her with the code word -- wild rose -- used with the Scions in fieldwork.
It was only natural that Tsubaki would be introduced to the Scions once agreeing to help out. She didn’t expect to hear Minfilia say to think of them as family in time. The sentiment was nice but only served to remind her of her past mistakes. The family she would never see due to her own shortcomings. It left a sort of hollow feeling, whether or not Minfilia and the others meant to come off as such. Family was a tough concept to wrap her mind around, but certainly, friends or allies would be enough for the time being. And just like that, her first task had been assigned to her with pleasantries out of the way. The Immortal Flames of Ul’dah requested aid regarding missing crystals. As if robbery were not enough, there were more missing people reports. It seemed like Limsa Lominsa was not the only one dealing with such severe conditions. The Scions had concerns that the Amalj’aa were attempting to summon their primal, Ifrit. The ruffian who had been harassing the innocent woman turned out to be working with the Amalj’aa. Upon confronting the man, they found themselves surrounded by Amalj’aa. It turns out that the Immortal Flames had a few traitors. Despite her best efforts to defend them, she had been put to sleep by a spell and taken to witness the coming of Ifrit. While the others had been tempered due to Ifrit’s influence, Tsubaki remained unaffected. Mentions of Paragons confirmed that the Ascians most definitely had a hand in manipulating the beast tribes and even the primals themselves. This was hardly what she had expected when they had informed her that the Scions’ goals were to rid the star of primal threats. Once Tsubaki took care of Ifrit, she found another crystal of light. Thancred showed up moments later, apologizing that he had not anticipated this mission to be so dangerous. Returning to the Waking Sands, it had been the start of what would be a trend.Get some rest. You’ll need it.It would become more and more common as her journey unfolds. It was also the beginning of more and more people treating her like a hero. Tsubaki began to understand just how much more involved it meant to be a Scion after the whole ordeal. Hearing that those who had been tempered must be put to death hit her hard. It was not only because of her immense regret for the past. It was also the regret of not being able to save those who would only live to serve that primal for the rest of their lives. It was something that she could not allow to happen. Not while she was around and could avoid being tempered herself. The three city-state representatives approached her to join their Grand Company after returning from dealing with Ifrit. Tsubaki had no particular preferences. After all, she’d only done what she had to help out. Admittedly, she had been more familiar with Limsa, having stayed there for a while by now. Their kind words about how courageous and strong she had been made her feel a little unsettled, but she did her best not to let it show. Tsubaki traveled around to attend each remembrance service hosted between the three city-states to make a decision. Before her trip, Minfilia entrusted her with a linkpearl to keep in touch regardless of where she was.During these ventures, she happened upon the twins once more for the first time since the ride to Limsa. She cared not for the prosperity that Ul’dah promised but the happiness and solace that she sought for herself. Though Gridania had a different take on life than those in Ul’dah, Tsubaki decided on the Maelstrom. In the end, it was the familiarity compared to what she had been used to most of her life that made her decision. The prospect of freedom seemed most appealing to her. Soon after returning, Minfilia sent her to rescue some allies of the Scions, meeting Biggs and Wedge.Primal Problems
After welcoming Biggs and Wedge in the Waking Sands, Minfilia asked her to win the sylph’s favor. The Order of the Twin Adder requested aid from the Scions to conduct a study. They were to survey the behavior of the sylphs. There was a chance that they were planning on summoning the primal Ramuh. Journeying into Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak to save the elder sylph Frixio, she finally faced off with Lahabrea. After introducing himself, he made a swift exit, but not without leaving behind a “gift.” After freeing Frixio, she witnessed a memory of Nero and Garlean soldiers searching for their “eikon” Ramuh. It was also the first mention of an “ultimate weapon.”
Returning to Little Solace, Frixio explained to Papalymo, Yda, and Tsubaki that he had been trying to watch over the Garleans and got caught. Handing over the missive from Kan-E-Senna, he explained that they only resorted to summoning Ramuh to protect the wood from the imperials. Just as Tsubaki was about to return the news to the Twin Adder, Frixio offered a crystal as thanks for her help. Frixio mentioned that Tsubaki was destined to walk a fate far crueler than he could ever imagine. It was a little unsettling to hear that, but she hoped he wasn’t right about her ill-gotten fate.Returning to the Waking Sands, all primal business seemed to be in order for the moment. She informed Minfilia about her encounter with Lahabrea. Unfortunately, their discussion was cut short when they heard Tataru’s scream outside. Noraxia came all that way to Thanalan to find Tsubaki for help. After a brief visit from a few more Ascians to gauge her strength while in Haukke Manor, the Maelstrom requested help from the Scions regarding the kobolds and their primal, Titan. Y’shtola warned her that Titan would be far more of a threat than Ifrit. She even mentioned that no one would blame her for backing down from the challenge if she chose to. As far as Tsubaki was concerned, she was already too far into this mess to back down now. If the Echo was vital in slaying primals, the duty would fall upon her to take care of it herself. While this was not the life she had expected, if her gift could help save other precious lives, Tsubaki intended to use it to do her part.To gather more information on Titan, she sought to find the Company of Heroes. They had her do various tasks to judge her character be

As a teenager, Tsubaki grew up sheltered and had been expressly told not to leave too far from home. As a result, she had been an antsy child ever since first arriving in Sui-no-Sato. Tsubaki yearned to learn more about the world and open her eyes to what was beyond their domain. That lead to insatiable curiosity and every moment she was denied the chance to explore that curiosity, the worse it got. It was that sheltered life that led her to caused her to make the mistake that would change her life forever. She had lost her parents. She could hardly handle the stigma and the dirty stares from the others, prompting her to leave Sui-no-Sato for good. She struggled for a long time to figure out just what she wanted to do with her life. How could she atone for what she’s done? The dancing troupe gave her a purpose, but even with a newfound goal to work towards, Tsubaki finds it hard to simply forget the past; to let it go and not take it too hard. She was much different now, but the past follows you.Once people began to call her a hero and treating her as such, she should have felt happy. Instead, the label only caused her grief. She felt that she was no hero and did not deserve such praise; Not after what she had done as a teenager. Still the pressure to not let anybody down got to her, pushing her to take on the role of the Warrior of Light. She became afraid to let people down. She felt like if she didn’t take up the mantle, many more people would die for her indecision and that was something that she could not abide by. She could not lose more people because of her stupid choices. As Tsubaki’s deeds became more well-known, so to did her responsibilities. A common theme was not only the way people idolized her to be this great savior, but also the way people often put her on a pedestal. It was always in good nature to tell her to get some rest -- and good reason -- but she often grows tired of people doting on her. Tired of the responsibilities that she’s had to take on. Tired or not, she still pushes onward, afraid to let anybody down. And it is because of this fear that she has become something of a workaholic. There were often times where she felt like she shouldn’t be celebrated as a hero. Times that she wished that she wasn’t the Warrior of Light. Even in those times of uncertainty, she doesn’t have it in her to throw away everything she’s worked for and abandon the title. If nothing else, her resolve has grown over time as well as her constant mental fatigue.
